When you have a tire that’s flat, damaged, or just nearing the end of its natural lifespan, you’ll need to change it in order to keep your vehicle safe and drivable. New tires can make your vehicle easier to handle, increase fuel efficiency, and provide better traction in wet or slippery conditions. If you don’t know how to change a tire, we’ve got you covered. Here are the six basic steps involved, as well as details on how we can change a tire for you in South Salt Lake.

How to Change a Tire Yourself

First, make sure you have the tools needed for changing a tire. In addition to the tire itself, you’ll need a car jack, lug wrench, and the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Now, you’re ready to get started:

  1. Be Safe If you get a flat or blow a tire while driving, move to the side of the road, well out of the way of traffic, and switch on your hazard lights.
  2. Secure the Vehicle Next, whether you’re on the roadside, in your garage or driveway, or at another location, secure the vehicle in place by engaging the parking brake and inserting wheel wedges under the other four tires.
  3. Take Off the Hubcap Remove the hubcap so you can see the lug nuts that attach the tire to the wheel rim. With your lug wrench, loosen the nuts.
  4. Raise the Vehicle Now, let the car jack lift the vehicle, then remove the lug nuts entirely.
  5. Replace the Tire Remove the bad tire and mount the new one in its place.
  6. Tighten the Lug Nuts Finally, tighten the lug nuts until secure, and use the jack to return the vehicle to the ground. Your new tire is ready to go!

How Often to Change Car Tires

Perhaps you don’t need to know how to change a tire, but how often to change your tires in the Salt Lake City area. Much depends on the tires themselves and how often you have them rotated. As long as you check the pressure and tread regularly, you should get the full mileage as listed by the manufacturer. For best results, get your tires rotated every time you get your oil changed.
