The 2018 Subaru Outback vs 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe

Very few people just buy a new car, crossover, or SUV on a whim-it's important to do a little research before diving head first into vehicle ownership. With this in mind, we wanted to save you a bit of time, and compare two popular SUVs for you, one is our own Subaru Outback, the other, Hyundai's Santa Fe.

Performance & Capability

The Salt Lake City area has some unique challenges--if you're trying to split your time between powder days and the everyday, the 2018 Subaru Outback will probably serve your needs a bit better than the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Most people know that the Subaru lineup offers standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) across the lineup-save for the BRZ, but a sports car is different!--and the Outback is no exception. Subaru's system is special for two reasons, both of which make it a better buy than the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe; first of all, the Subaru Outback's AWD system is standard, unlike the 2018 Santa Fe's available system, and it's an "always on" AWD system, which means it isn't reactive, it's predictive. Other systems sometimes wait until slippage is detected before sending power to all four wheels, which means it has to react to the situation-the 2018 Subaru Outback, however, might just avoid the slippage altogether.

If we're talking straight power, the 2018 Outback starts with an efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder putting out 175 horsepower, but there is an available 3.6-liter six-cylinder putting up 256 horsepower, which should satisfy those who need a little more oomph. On the other hand, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe only offers one engine, a 3.3-liter V6 serving up 290 horsepower. That's quite a bit of power, but it's only marginally more than the 3.6-liter engine available in the 2018 Subaru Outback.

Advanced Safety Features

Safety is one of the most important factors when it comes to buying a new vehicle, so it only makes sense for drivers from South Salt Lake or Park City, UT to be looking for a vehicle with the most advanced safety features. For the 2018 Subaru Outback, that comes in a lot of forms; we already mentioned the standard Subaru AWD, but Subaru also has an available driver-assist system, called Subaru EyeSight®. 2018 Subaru Outback models equipped with Subaru EyeSight® and available LED Headlights earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation; while the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation with optional safety equipment and special optional headlights, it earned an "Acceptable" score on the passenger-side small overlap test, while the 2018 Outback earned a score of "Good," and the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe only earned an "Acceptable" score in the Child Seat Anchors Ease of Use category, which the 2018 Subaru Outback got a "Good" grade on.

Interior Comfort & Technology

Quiet inside, well-designed, and full of premium, soft-touch materials, the 2018 Subaru Outback is a great choice for families on the go. It offers seating for five on comfortable, supportive seats. Cloth upholstery is standard, though leather upholstery, heated seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat are available. In the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, three rows are standard, so you'll have seating for seven, but that'll eat into your cargo room pretty significantly. The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe has just 13.5 cubic-feet of cargo space behind its seats, while the 2018 Subaru Outback has 35.5 cubic-feet behind its seats.

Both the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe and the 2018 Subaru Outback offer Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ as standard equipment, but the 2018 Outback's Subaru STARLINK™ system is more than just apps and music, offering available navigation services as well as Security Remote Serviecs.

Price & Value

When it comes to price, the 2018 Outback has a clear advantage, starting much lower, with an MSRP of $25,895, while the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe starts at $30,850. Not only does the 2018 Outback cost significantly less than the 2018 Santa Fe, it's important to consider the value you get for your money-and with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, plenty of space for people and things, as well as upscale technology options, we think the 2018 Subaru Outback isn't just a better deal than the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, but also a better value.
