*While the Sonata has a better fuel mileage estimate, it does not offer AWD, which affects MPG estimates. In our opinion, we'd rather have the peace of mind of all-wheel drive with the weather we experience here in the Salt Lake area. After all, mpg hardly matters if you can't reach your destination to begin with!

Legacy versus Sonata

In the crowded midsize sedan segment, it's extremely helpful to compare two seemingly similar cars against each other to determine which best meets your driving demands. Fortunately, we're here to help, pitting the Subaru Legacy up against its Hyundai Sonata competition. We compared base models of each vehicle, to keep things as fair as possible.

We think it's important to note that, while the Sonata comes in at a slightly lower MSRP, that miniscule price savings may not mean much when you consider all of the extra features that the Legacy has to offer.

Fuel efficiency is basically the same between the two vehicles, and their fuel tanks hold the same capacity, so you'll end up visiting the gas station equally often. The Sonata does deliver slightly more horsepower and pound-feet of torque, but it fails to offer the assurance of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive -- which is a standard feature on the Legacy, as it is on all Subaru models. Considering the weather conditions we enjoy in Salt Lake City, Park City, West Valley City and South Salt Lake, we'd happily trade a modicum of power for the more assured driving control the Legacy offers.

Subaru Legacy Performance in Winter

Subaru Legacy EyeSight

Both sedans were given 5-Star overall crash ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and both offer standard anti-lock brake system, driver airbag, passenger airbag, front side airbags and side-curtain airbags. Both also boast standard daytime running lights, traction control, electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring systems and brake assist, which should reassure anyone looking at purchasing either car.

However, the Sonata just doesn't match up when you consider that it lacks the assurance of all-wheel drive. The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive found standard in the Legacy provides you with optimal traction balance and traction and  redirects power to the wheels that have traction. The result is outstanding grip in rain, snow or rough terrain, for a consistently solid connection to the road.

Both vehicles offer the convenience of standard Bluetooth® streaming, an AM/FM stereo, cruise control, trip computer, MP3 player, auxiliary audio input, power steering, power windows, auto-off headlights and wireless cell phone connection, to name just a few of the state-of-the-art amenities you expect. However, the Legacy is the only one of the two to allow you to add remote engine start to your vehicle -- an extremely useful function during our Utah winters.
