Mark Miller Subaru Wins the 2023 Cox Automotive Leader in Sustainability Award

Mark Miller Subaru has been named the recipient of the Cox Automotive Leader in Sustainability Award, an honor that recognizes one retailer each year for outstanding in-retailer sustainability programs. What the Leader in Sustainability Award Recognizes Cox Automotive presents this award to a retailer with standout programs in waste reduction, energy, or water conservation, judged on innovation, creativity, and engagement with employees and the community. It is a national recognition, and it reflects work that happens every day at both of our Utah locations. A Utah First in the Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program Mark Miller Subaru was the first retailer in Utah to be certified in the Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. Being environmentally friendly is not a trend here, it is a way of life, and it shapes how the business runs. Solar Power and Recycled Water at Both Retailers Both Mark Miller Subaru retailers are solar powered and run highly efficient water reclamation systems. Between the two rooftops there are more than 1,200 solar panels, which allow roughly 60 percent of our power to come from the sun. The car washes at both locations recycle their water, saving 75 gallons per wash. $3.7 Million Given Back Since 2010 Since 2010, Mark Miller Subaru has donated over $3.7 million to charity to help people, pets, and the planet. The award recognizes that record alongside the day to day conservation work at our stores. Where the Award Funding Is Going The award comes with $10,000 to fund a sustainability project. We are partnering with our Subaru Loves the Earth partner, HawkWatch International, to put those funds toward conservation efforts here in our community. "We only have one planet, and we have to protect it." Jeff Miller, CEO and General Manager Visit Mark Miller Subaru Mark Miller Subaru serves Salt Lake City from our Midtown retailer at 3535 S. TIS the Season to Recycle With Mark Miller Subaru

The holidays bring more boxes, more paper, and more waste than any other stretch of the year. At Mark Miller Subaru, recycling is not a seasonal push. It is built into how both of our Utah retailers run every day. Recycling Is Part of How We Operate Mark Miller Subaru was the first retailer in Utah to be certified in the Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. Both locations are solar powered, with more than 1,200 panels across the two rooftops supplying roughly 60 percent of our electricity. Both car washes recycle their water, saving 75 gallons per wash, and both stores run highly efficient water reclamation systems. Easy Ways to Cut Holiday Waste A few small habits make a real difference between Thanksgiving and New Year: Break down and flatten shipping boxes so they actually fit in the bin Skip glitter and foil wrap, which cannot be recycled, and use paper or reusable bags instead Recycle string lights and electronics at a drop off site rather than tossing them Compost food scraps from holiday cooking Bring your own bags for gift shopping Subaru Loves the Earth Subaru Loves the Earth is one of the pillars of the Subaru Love Promise, and it is the piece of the promise that fits our corner of the world best. Utah air and Utah water are why a lot of our customers live here, and protecting them is part of the job. How the Utah Jazz and Mark Miller Subaru Are Supporting English Language Learners at West Lake Jr. High

Mark Miller Subaru and the Utah Jazz are long-term business partners, and the two organizations started a joint philanthropic initiative to support learning in our community. West Lake STEM Jr. High was selected as the first beneficiary. A School That Needed the Help While all schools have struggled in recent years, West Lake STEM Jr. High faced greater challenges because of irreparable damage caused by the 2020 earthquake in Utah. The original West Lake Jr. High had to be demolished, and students were bussed to a previously decommissioned elementary school in Taylorsville. Twenty-Five Languages in One Building West Lake STEM is a vibrant and diverse middle school that uses creative, engaging, hands-on teaching to meet the needs of a highly impacted student body. Twenty-five different languages are spoken within its halls, and for 70 percent of students English is not their first language. Many students at West Lake STEM recently moved to America. Entering school for the first time in a new country is a significant challenge for Multi-Language Learner students. Most are learning about a new community and looking for a place to belong. They walk on campus without friends, without knowing their teachers, and without being sure what middle school is all about. For some, it is their first experience in an educational setting, and many find that their teachers do not speak their language. A Combined $30,000 for a New Language Lab To help West Lake STEM support these English Language Learners, Mark Miller Subaru and the Utah Jazz jointly donated a combined $30,000 for a new language lab inside the school. What the Lab Changes Research shows that language acquisition improves through consistent practice. The lab increases practice opportunities and engagement in language learning, and it supports students socially and emotionally by giving them more ways to communicate with each other and with a wider range of classmates. Students build connections while practicing English at the same time. The language lab was officially unveiled during a school-wide celebration on Friday, November 11, 2022. Utah Jazz and Mark Miller Subaru Donate $30,000 to the West Lake STEM Language Lab

WEST VALLEY, Utah. Through the Adopt-A-School program, the Utah Jazz and Mark Miller Subaru donated nearly $30,000 to renovate the computer language lab at West Lake STEM Junior High. A New Language Lab for West Lake STEM Twenty-five different languages are spoken among the Multi-Language Learner students at West Lake STEM. To meet that need, both organizations purchased the Renaissance 2.0 Language Lab System for the school computer language lab. The new lab includes 36 stations for students. Unveiling Day The lab was unveiled on November 11 at 10:45 a.m., following a school assembly, according to a release from the Jazz. Why This Partnership Matters "Mark Miller Subaru is proud of our long-time partnership with the Utah Jazz and are truly honored to be standing alongside them in making this meaningful financial contribution to West Lake Jr. High School." Jeff Miller, owner of Mark Miller Subaru "It is our hope that this investment for advanced classroom technology will help English Language Learners at West Lake Junior High while simultaneously connecting students from various backgrounds and cultures to one another in both a powerful and life-changing manner." Jeff Miller More Projects Ahead In addition to the language lab, three more projects were scheduled at the school during the 2022-23 Jazz season. SALT LAKE CITY, June 14, 2021. More than 50 Wasatch Front businesses, along with the Utah Rivers Council, asked Utah governor and legislature to do more to conserve water. What the Letter Asks For In a letter to the governor, the 51 businesses asked for a 2 percent reduction in water usage per year. "They need to do far more from a conservation standpoint. We need to do something and we hope the governor is more aggressive, and the state overall has done very little from a conservation standpoint." Steve Schmit, owner of Western Rivers Flyfisher "We need water. Not just the trout that we fish for in our streams but also for water quality, I mean it all trickles down to us eventually." Steve Schmit Outdoor Businesses Speaking Up Wasatch Touring also signed the letter. "The levels of the rivers and the reservoirs that we love to play and explore and recreate in have been going down. It is definitely coming to a point where it is going to take kind of a rallying cry for this." Dylan Timmer, co-owner of Wasatch Touring Why Mark Miller Subaru Signed "We have a lot of outdoorsy customers and they are out there. And they are on the lakes and up in these mountains and they are seeing these rivers." An Excellent Equation for Success: The Mark Miller Subaru Story

There is no single trick behind a car business that lasts. At Mark Miller Subaru the formula has been consistent for generations: a family that stays in the business, a brand that fits Utah, and a habit of giving money back to the community that spends it here. Four Generations of Millers Jeff Miller is the fourth generation of the Miller family businesses, which started in the early 1900s. He became General Manager and Chief Executive Officer after buying out his father, Mark Miller, who spent 45 years in the automotive industry. Fifty Years With One Brand In December 2021, Subaru of America presented Mark Miller Subaru with a 50-year award. Five decades with a single manufacturer is uncommon in retail automotive, and it says something about the fit between the brand and the state. Giving Is Part of the Business Model Since 2010, Mark Miller Subaru has donated over $3.7 million to charity to help people, pets, and the planet, working with more than 100 Utah nonprofits. In 2018 the retailer was named Subaru Love Promise Retailer of the Year, the most distinguished award Subaru of America gives each year. Doing It the Right Way In 2016 the David Eccles School of Business Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative, the Daniels Fund, and the Community Foundation of Utah honored Mark Miller Subaru with the Most Ethical Business award at the Utah Ethical Leadership Awards. Building Green Mark Miller Subaru was the first retailer in Utah certified in the Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. Rez Dog Rescuer Up for International Unsung Hero Award, With a Lift From Mark Miller Subaru

A rescuer working to get stray dogs off the Navajo Nation and into homes was nominated for an international Unsung Hero award. Part of that work runs through a chartered plane out of Utah. How the Rescues Work If the crew sees a dog in critical need on the street, they will pick it up, but in deference to Navajo Nation law they usually pull from existing rescues on the reservation. Where Mark Miller Subaru Comes In Sometimes Utah Subaru retailer Mark Miller helps out with a chartered plane, which cuts the trip down to a few hours. A drive that eats an entire day becomes a short flight, and dogs in poor condition get to care faster. A Long Way From the High Desert The lush mountains of Park City are a far cry from their high desert homeland, but the rez dogs adjust quickly, McCurtain said. In fact, they usually think they have died and gone to heaven. Pets Are Part of the Love Promise Helping pets is one of the pillars of the Subaru Love Promise, and it has been a steady part of what Mark Miller Subaru supports in Utah, from reservation rescue flights to local shelter partnerships. Mark Miller Subaru Gives the Gift of Transportation to Ronald McDonald House Families

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Ronald McDonald House Charities to change how it houses families, Mark Miller Subaru stepped in with the one thing those families suddenly did not have: a way to get where they needed to go. A Housing Model Had to Change Ronald McDonald House Charities made the difficult decision to suspend its communal living model and instead found safe, separate temporary housing for pediatric patient families with high acuity children. That change left many families with no means of transportation to and from Primary Children Hospital. Subaru Loaners for Families Who Needed Them Mark Miller Subaru heard about the problem and moved quickly to offer Subaru loaners to families in need, closing the gap between temporary housing and the hospital. PPE for the Staff Mark Miller Subaru also donated PPE face masks to all Ronald McDonald House employees who interact with patients and the public, so staff could stay safe and healthy while providing these critical services. One of the First Moves by a New CEO This was one of the first things Mark Miller Subaru new General Manager and Chief Executive Officer did after taking over. Jeff Miller bought his father out following Mark Miller 45 years in the automotive industry, and now marks the fourth generation of Miller family businesses that started in the early 1900s.
