There were 250,000 stray and roaming dogs and cats on the Navajo Reservation in the Four Corners area in 2014, according to the tribal council. That was the year Nuzzles and Co., the Park City based animal rescue nonprofit, began visiting the area for monthly rescue trips. Nuzzles and Co., a Utah nonprofit, organizes animal rescues every year in the Navajo Nation near Kayenta, Arizona. In 2018, the largest mission of the year went out on a Thursday morning. A 5:45 a.m. Start Starting at 5:45 a.m., volunteers loaded Mark Miller plane with kennels to bring back dogs and cats in need of immediate care from the reservation. Why the Plane Matters Driving animals in poor condition across the Four Corners takes most of a day. Flying them turns that into a few hours, which changes the odds for the animals who need veterinary care the soonest. The Salt Lake Tribune and Mark Miller Subaru teamed up for the holiday season to benefit Volunteers of America, Utah, and asked the community for help providing needed items for homeless teens and young people. When and Where to Donate Donations were accepted December 1, 8, and 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the nonprofit VOA Youth Resource Center, 888 S. 400 West, in Salt Lake City. What the Center Needs The center, which provides emergency overnight shelter and other services to youth ages 15 to 22, needed cash, warm clothing, and blankets. Donations are tax deductible. Why This One Winter in Salt Lake is not survivable outside without gear. A warm coat and a blanket are small things to give and large things to receive when you are 17 with nowhere to sleep. Subaru Share the Love is a nationwide sales and charity event. For the 2017 event, Subaru of America donated $250 for every new Subaru sold or leased between November 16, 2017 and January 2, 2018. How Customers Chose Each customer selected one organization from two hometown charities or four national charities to receive the donation. The 2017 Hometown Charities Mark Miller Subaru selected the local VOA Homeless Youth Resource Center and Nuzzles and Co. Pet Rescue as its two hometown charities for 2017. The National Charities Subaru of America selected ASPCA, Meals on Wheels, Make A Wish, and the National Parks Foundation as the four national options. An Extra $50 for Local Mark Miller Subaru donated an additional $50, for a total of $300, whenever a new car customer selected one of the two hometown charities as the Share the Love recipient. Through the Service Paws and Patriots campaign, Mark Miller Subaru and several other local businesses helped place a fully trained service animal with an Army veteran. How the Placement Happened The city of South Salt Lake was able to place Tink, a service animal, with Christine McKoon, a former combat helicopter pilot. Local businesses pooling resources is often the only way one of these placements happens at all. Mark Miller Subaru teamed up with the Utah Animal Care Center to help animals affected by Hurricane Harvey find forever homes in Utah. Animals Displaced by the Storm Many of the animals were found scattered throughout the Houston area, looking for food and shelter after the hurricane. Free Care Before Adoption The Utah Animal Care Center in Layton provided free services including spaying, neutering, and shots to make sure the animals were healthy before being placed for adoption. Why Utah Shelters in a disaster zone fill past capacity fast, and moving healthy adoptable animals out of the region is what makes room for the ones still being rescued.
